Abstract

Abstract: The antiasthmatic properties of chloroquine were investigated in rabbits. Chloroquine did not influence the anaphylactic response to egg albumin and did not alter the content of histamine, serotonin and catecholamines in the lungs. The intravenous injection of chloroquine reduced the bronchoconstrictor effect of histamine. However, the antagonism is not like the usual effect of antihistaminic agents which are ineffective against bronchial asthma. It is suggested that the difference depends on the accessability of chloroquine to the histamine released in the lung. The other aminoquinoline investigated was quinetholate [4-(4-dimethyl-aminoethylamino)-6-methoxyquinoline]. Like chloroquine, quinetholate antagonized the effect of histamine on the lung in rabbits and blocked arrhythmias induced by chloroform in mice. Quinetholate, which has been used for the treatment of bronchial asthma, deserves some consideration for treatment of arrhythmias but has no antimalarial properties.
